About me

I am a Full Professor of Computer Science at the Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín, Colombia. My fields of expertise are in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning and signal processing, mainly applied to healthcare and computer-aided diagnostic system. I teach basic and advanced courses in Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Probabilistic Machine/Deep learning.

  • 19/02/2026 I will serve as co-chair of the structured session “Voice, Speech and Language in Neurodegenerative Diseases” at Forum Acusticum 2026 (FA2026), organized by the Austrian Acoustical Association. The conference will be held in Graz, Austria, from September 8 to 12, 2026. Please visit the conference website for information on important dates and other areas within the scope of the forum.

  • 29/01/2026 I was accepted in working groups 1, 2 and 4 of COST action CA24128 - European Network to Advance the Development and Implementation of Vocal Biomarkers (eVoiceNet).

  • 27/08/2025 I was inveted as keynote speaker to the eighth edition of the IEEE Colombian Conference on Applications in Computational Intelligence - ColCACI2025 held at the Universidad del Quindío, Armenia, Colombia, between August 25th-27th, 2025. Title of the talk: “From Explainability to Trustworthiness in the Application of AI to Biomedical Contexts.”

  • 1/07/2025. The special issue proposal on “Modeling and Processing Language and Speech in Neurodegenerative Disorders” was accepted by the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing. I am part of the guest editors along with Prof. Stefanie Shattuck-Hufnagel from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MA, USA, Prof. Juan I. Godino-Llorente from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Madrid, Spain,Prof. Mark Hasegawa-Johnson from University of Illinois, IL, USA and Prof. Helen Meng from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, NT, Hong Kong.

  • 21/11/2024 I was in Cambridge, MA as part of the organizing committe of the 2nd Automatic Assessment of Parkinsonian Speech Workshop held at the premises of the Research Laboratory of electronics (RLE) of the Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT).

  • 9/11/2023 I was invited as panelist to the forum Inteligencia Artificial - Usos, Potencialidades y Limitaciones organised by the Colombian Academy of Science and Sapiencia.

Brief biography

I was born in Manizales, Colombia. I received the B.S. degree in Electronic engineering and MEng. degree in Engineering - Industrial Automation from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Manizales, Colombia, in 2005 and 2007 respectively. In 2010 I completed a dual PhD degree in Computer Science and Automatics from both the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. I also received the European Doctorate Mention from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. From 2010 to 2011 I was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic and Biomedical Engineering, Universidad Antonio Nariño, Bogotá, Colombia. Since 2012 I am part of the Dpt. of Systems Engineering, Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín, Colombia; in December 2020 I was appointed as a Full Professor. From March 2022 to December 2024, I joined the Dpt. of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain as a Visiting Researcher under a María Zambrano grant funded by the European Union-NextGenerationEU. I am a Senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the ELLIS network.
